Year 1

It is a pleasure to welcome you all back for the start of our final half term. We are looking forward to an exciting and productive few weeks ahead as we continue to support your child in their learning and development. During this time, we will also be carefully preparing them for a smooth and confident transition into Year 2 in September.
To begin this half term in English, we will be focusing on the book Beegu. The children will take part in a range of engaging writing activities inspired by the story, including posters, guides, captions, letters, speech bubbles and our own version of an ‘alien’ narrative. Later in the term, we will explore Dinosaurs and all that rubbish, completing a variety of tasks such as letters, setting descriptions, instructions, narrative and  pamphlets.  In Maths, we will focus on multiplication and division before moving on to fractions and final geometry.
Our History topic is ‘Why did Emmeline stop a tram at Heaton Park in Bury in 1908?’ Pupils will learn about Emmeline Pankhurst and the campaign for women’s right to vote. They will find out about her life in Manchester and what suffrage means, as well as why her supporters were called suffragettes. Children will explore the different ways suffragettes tried to persuade the government, including protests and speeches and study the important event at Heaton Park in Bury in 1908 where Emmeline stopped a tram as part of a protest.  This term in Science, pupils will continue their learning about ‘Plants’ by focusing on trees. They will learn the difference between deciduous trees and evergreen trees. Children will observe and compare different types of trees in their local environment, identifying key features such as leaves, bark and shape. Through outdoor investigation and practical activities, they will build on their previous knowledge of plant structure and begin to understand how trees change through the seasons and how to recognise and classify them.  This term in RE, pupils will explore the question ‘How should we care for the world and for others and why does it matter?’ They will learn that many religious stories teach that everyone is unique and valuable and that Christians and Jews believe God created the world and wants people to look after it. Children will also think about how people show care for others, such as helping those in need and why it is important for everyone to care for both people and the environment.
We will also take part in our wonderful Music lessons with Mrs Higson on a Friday and heart pumping PE session with a Coach on a Monday.
