Year 5
Welcome to the Year 5 Class Page!
Here you will find all the important information about our learning for this half term. We have an exciting and engaging term ahead, packed with lots of fantastic opportunities to learn and grow.
This half term, our topic will focus on how medical breakthroughs over the past 250 years have transformed the lives of people in Britain. We will investigate significant discoveries and innovations, exploring their impact on society and how they continue to influence our lives today.
In English, we will be studying Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover by Markus Motum. This inspiring text explores themes of exploration, discovery and curiosity. Children will follow the remarkable journey of NASA's Curiosity rover as it travels to Mars. Throughout the unit, they will write labels to explain the rover's features, use cohesive devices to develop and expand their ideas, and apply the passive voice when recording the rover's landing on Mars. They will also create a news report for broadcast in Times Square before bringing together their learning by designing their own rover and writing an expanded explanation to propose it as the future of NASA exploration.
In Maths, we will continue developing our understanding of position and direction before moving on to measurement and finishing the term with negative numbers.
In Art, we will explore installation art, investigating how artists use space, scale and a range of materials to communicate ideas, transform environments and influence the viewer's experience.
PE lessons will be taught by Coach Jess on Wednesdays. On Fridays, we will focus on athletics, developing key skills and techniques in preparation for Sports Day.
In Spanish, we will learn about important festivals celebrated in Spain, discussing our own favourite festivals and identifying similarities and differences between celebrations.
Mr Martin and Mrs Higson will continue to work with us on Friday mornings, helping us to develop our musical skills and prepare for performances later in the term.
We have so much to look forward to this half term and cannot wait to share our learning with you. Please visit this page regularly to keep up to date with our exciting learning journey.
