Be the best you can be

Physical Education

Our Vision

Intent

We believe that P.E. and sports plays an important role for every pupil with the potential to change young people's lives for the better. At Ribble Drive, we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and wellbeing. We provide a broad and balanced Physical Education Curriculum which is intended to provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a range of movement situations. Physical education encourages pupils to be active and supports them in their understanding of how to participate safely and effectively. Our PE curriculum is inclusive to ensure that pupils of all abilities access the range of activities on offer and that they are physically active for sustained periods of time in order to encourage them to lead healthy, active lives.

Implementation

The Ribble Drive curriculum aims for the children to ‘Be the Best they can be. We offer them a broad and balanced PE curriculum which aims for them to fulfil their potential and engage with all the opportunities the school has to offer.

Our PE curriculum is sequenced precisely by our highly qualified coach from Progressive Sports. This excellent coaching team, as well as our enthusiastic teachers, aim to ensure progression of knowledge and skills throughout a child’s primary education, thus enabling children to build upon prior experiences and apply these fluently, with confidence. Children also have the opportunity to further these skills at after school sports clubs thus making club links within the community.

Inter and intra sports competitions are an integral part of our school. Although we enjoy the competitive nature of sport, we also appreciate and encourage the importance of children ‘having a go’ and promote positive experiences of being physically active and not always participating to win. We have an inclusive approach and value the importance of physical and mental well-being.

Children take part in a range of invasion, striking & fielding or net & wall games, we promote imagination and creativity in gymnastics and dance as well as provide opportunities for athletics using both indoor and outdoor environments plus outdoor and adventurous activities. Pupils are encouraged to take part in extra curricular clubs and have the opportunity to compete against other schools. In Years 5 and 6, children go on a residential course for outdoor activities, however they also carry out intrinsic outdoor adventure activities through our ‘Get Set 4 PE’ scheme of learning. Whilst in Year 4, children will be involved in an intensive 2 week swimming programme at Castle Leisure Centre in Bury with the intent that all children will leave Ribble Drive being able to swim a minimum of 25 metres unaided.

Playtimes are an important part of our pupils being happy, healthy and ready to learn. We have well-staffed and equipped playground and an adventurous outdoor learning area. We also have an exercise trail which was designed to provide opportunities for children to develop and improve fundamental skills using various body parts.

Our PE curriculum has been designed in line with the National Curriculum (2014), to produce clear skills and knowledge progression.
